The Kiln
We invested in the kilns because we found that using
large timber, up to 20" in diameter, and drying it naturally
outdoors was not drying all the way to the core.
Now we naturally dry the timber as much as possible
and then we put it into our kilns for 18 hours to dry out the
last of the moisture. This creates a log that will burn better
and provide more heat.
We are very lucky to use a bio-waste boiler that runs on the bi products of out processing. This means that as our timber comes from certified sources, the kiln dried firewood is carbon neutral, making it both a cheaper way to heat your house and also a greener way. Problems caused by using wet wood:
- Heat energy is wasted actually drying the log
in the fire so that it becomes dry enough to burn
- Can make lighting the fire and keeping it going
a real chore
- Causes your chimney to soot up faster causing
problems and requiring more call outs of the chimney sweep. |
